Many students revise the content well but still lose marks because they do not understand how the exam is built. Knowing what Paper 1 and Paper 2 ask, how marks are split and how to use your time is one of the easiest ways to improve a grade. This guide explains the O Level Business Studies (7115) format in simple terms. Always confirm the latest details in the official Cambridge syllabus for your exam year.
The Two Papers at a Glance
| Paper 1 | Paper 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Short answer and data response | Case study |
| Duration | 1 hour 30 minutes | 1 hour 30 minutes |
| Marks | 80 | 80 |
| Weighting | 50% | 50% |
Both papers are compulsory, so each is worth half of your final grade.
Paper 1: Short Answer and Data Response
Paper 1 tests a wide range of topics through structured questions. Some parts ask for a definition or a quick calculation, while others use short business information (a data response) and ask you to explain or analyse. Because it spans the whole syllabus, gaps in any topic will cost marks.
Paper 2: Case Study
Paper 2 is built around a single business situation. You read the case, then answer questions that expect you to use the business context, numbers and facts from the text. The final questions usually reward judgement: you must weigh up options and make a justified recommendation.
Command Words and What They Mean
- State / Identify: a brief answer, no explanation needed.
- Explain: give a reason, then develop it (because, so, which leads to).
- Analyse: break down causes and effects with a chain of reasoning.
- Justify / Recommend: choose an option and support it with reasons, usually with a short comparison.
Time Management
With about one mark per minute, a 6-mark question deserves around six minutes. Do not spend ten minutes on a 2-mark definition. Leave five minutes at the end to check calculations and add a missing conclusion.
How Marks Are Earned
Lower-mark questions reward knowledge. Higher-mark questions reward application (using the business in the question), analysis (developed reasoning) and evaluation (judgement). Always include a detail from the case, such as the product, location or numbers given.
How to Prepare for Each Paper
- Practise Paper 1 topic by topic, then in full under timed conditions.
- Read the case study twice for Paper 2: first for the story, then to underline numbers and clues.
- Use past papers and mark schemes to learn how examiners award marks. See my past paper resources and free notes.
