Business Studies is not a subject you can pass by reading notes once. Marks come from understanding concepts, using them in context and judging decisions. These 10 methods are the ones I use with my online students in Pakistan, and they work for O Level, IGCSE and A Level.
1. Learn Definitions With Active Recall
Cover your notes and write each key term from memory, then check. Do this daily for five minutes. Flashcards work well for definitions and formulas.
2. Study by Topic, Then Mix
Start with one topic at a time (for example marketing mix), then mix topics in weekly review sessions so you can link ideas.
3. Make One-Page Summaries
After each topic, condense it to one page: definitions, formulas, examples, advantages and disadvantages. These are perfect for last-week revision.
4. Use Real Businesses as Examples
Link every concept to a business you know: a local restaurant, a clothing brand or a mobile network. Examples make ideas stick and improve application marks.
5. Practise Calculations Weekly
Break-even, cash flow, ratios and costs appear regularly. Do a few calculations every week rather than all at once. See break-even analysis and cash flow forecasts.
6. Work Through Past Papers Properly
Do timed questions, mark them using the mark scheme, then rewrite weak answers. Use the past paper solutions to see what examiners expect.
7. Practise Case Studies
Read the case, underline numbers and clues, and write answers that use them. Case study practice is the biggest gap for most students.
8. Learn Evaluation Phrases
Practise phrases such as “this depends on…” and “the most significant factor is… because”. Evaluation requires a judgement, not just a list.
9. Explain Topics Aloud
Teaching a topic to a friend or to yourself shows what you do not yet understand.
10. Review Mistakes in a Log
Keep a mistakes log: the question, what went wrong and the correct approach. Review it weekly.
